                         BEHIND THE SCENES

Saori Ueda
St. Catalina Girls’ High School

Have you ever entered a restaurant before the store opens? Maybe not. Of course, neither have I. Every morning I pass through a shopping street on my way to school. All the shutters are closed. However, I sometimes wonder what preparations are being done behind each door. Maybe in a restaurant, a young woman cleans the floor and puts the sugar pot on each table. But nobody thinks about the person who made the preparations.
I belong to Karatedo club in the high school. Seven years ago, I went to the Karate gym with my friend. The moment I saw Karate, I was very interested in the unique movements. I enjoyed the practice and remembered various movements little by little. And six months later, for the first time, I took part in the official match held in a community hall. I was only 10 years old. So I became very nervous. But against most expectations, I won the match in the junior class. I defeated all opponents who had much more experience. Impossible!
After the award ceremony, I was about to go out from the hall when my mother came to me, saying, ‘Saori, congratulations. You made it. But you forgot to do something.’ ‘What?’ I was puzzled. I was beside myself with winning, so I couldn’t understand what she said. ‘I don’t know what to do, mom,’ I said. Then she asked, ’Do you know how many people prepared this meeting? How long it took them to arrange it?’
Can you guess what I should have done? Yes, it was making a bow just before leaving. Making a bow, we call it ‘Ichi- Rei’, is one of our ways to express our thanks to all people who are concerned with the event.
Frankly speaking, my Karate ability is not top level. Therefore, I cannot participate in all the games. However, I try to go to support the events as much as possible. Because I know how a lot of people arrange the hall. Because I know how hard it is even to spread the mats on the floor. One hundred forty four mats per court. There is a process of preparation before all events. And there are a lot of people behind any scenes. It’s important for us to do our best with gratitude to all people who are out of sight.
